Becoming a Freemason is straightforward. You don’t need to be invited.
“Making Good Men Better”, describes Freemasonry perfectly.
We are good men of the community, with high moral standards, working together with like-minded individuals.
Who We’re Looking For
Applicants for membership must be able to demonstrate good character.
Joining Freemasonry is a long term and important time committment.
Freemasons lodges meet on the same day of the week, once a month, for a certain number of times per year. For example, you may hear that a lodge meets on the third Thursday, September through to April. It is important to think about what nights of the week are acceptable to you, as it has a bearing on which lodge is selected.
You must be able to cover the subscription fee to a lodge. This is in the region of £270 a year, excluding meals after the meeting (which you are expected to attend) which is approximately £22. Plus, some amount of charity which is at your own discretion. Such subscription costs are towards;
- The costs of the hall upkeep
- The direct costs to the lodge itself
- A contribution towards the administration, and charitable endeavours of the provincial and national structures of Freemasonry
You must be able to confirm that you can afford these subscriptions. If a member cannot pay such subscriptions, then he will be unfortunately excluded from his lodge.
Male Adult
All applicants must be male and aged 18 and over.
Female Freemasonry has existed for over 100 years and is an independent organisation. Please visit Order of Women Freemasonry or HFAF for further information.
A Belief In A Supreme Being
You must to be able to answer positively to this extremely important question. Not being able to do so will unfortunately preclude you from being a Freemason. If you have any questions about this please feel free to talk to us.
Proposer and Seconder
If you would like to apply to be an applicant you must have two existing Masons who are members of the Lodge you are joining to support your application.
These members will ‘propose and second’ you. Many applicants approach our lodges who don’t know anyone who is a Mason, and that’s perfectly fine. Members who joined in the past knew each other via work, or family. This is simply not the case these days due to the nature of work and life.
If you’re interested in becoming a Mason, we’ll take the time to get to know you, and you can get to know us by attending several of our open functions.
There is no rush.
A senior Brother in our area will get in touch with you after you fill in the form below. He will most likely ask you some questions related to the above. Please be honest.
After discussion, he will most likely recommend you to a lodge who will take over the process of getting to know you (and you them). They may invite you to an interview or a social event to meet face to face.
If, for whatever reason, you are not mutually compatible then the Area Team will reintroduce themselves to you for further discussion.
